Here is how this network printer can be properly configured on 64 bit gentoo (I am using kernel gentoo-sources-3.0.6)<\/p>\n<h1>Printer<\/h1>\n<h2>Cups and other needed packages<\/h2>\n<p>Emerge cups and few other needed dependencies. Start cupsd.<\/p>\n<p><code><br \/>\nemerge -av cups\u00a0rpm a2ps tcsh<br \/>\n\/etc\/init.d\/cupsd start<br \/>\nrc-update add cupsd default<br \/>\n<\/code><\/p>\n<h2>Drivers<\/h2>\n<p>Get lpr and cupwrapper drivers for MFC-7460DN from <a href=\"http:\/\/welcome.solutions.brother.com\/bsc\/public_s\/id\/linux\/en\/download_prn.html\">Brother&#8217;s driver download page<\/a>. The versions at the time of writing are:<\/p>\n<pre>\r\ncupswrapperMFC7460DN-2.0.4-2.i386\r\nmfc7460dnlpr-2.1.0-1.i386\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>Install drivers and create a symbolic link to the filter file <\/p>\n<p><code><br \/>\nrpm  -ihv  --nodeps  mfc7460dnlpr-2.1.0-1.i386.rpm<br \/>\nrpm  -ihv  --nodeps  cupswrapperMFC7460DN-2.0.4-2.i386.rpm<br \/>\nln -s \/usr\/lib\/cups\/filter\/brlpdwrapperMFC7460DN  \/usr\/libexec\/cups\/filter\/brlpdwrapperMFC7460DN<br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Configure CUPS<\/h2>\n<p>Open browser and go to <a href=\"http:\/\/127.0.0.1:631\/\" title=\"CUPS server web interface\">CUPS server web interface<\/a>. Add new printer and select device <b>AppSocket\/HP JetDirect<\/b>. Device url is IP of the printer. In my case it is socket:\/\/192.168.2.227. If you are not sure what IP your printer has, you can use nmap command<br \/>\n<code><br \/>\nnmap -S 192.168.2.*<br \/>\n<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Finally, select ppd file at <code>\/usr\/share\/cups\/model\/<\/code><\/p>\n<p>The printer should be ready. Try with test page. You can also list all printers with<br \/>\n<code><br \/>\nlpstat -p -d<br \/>\n<\/code><\/p>\n<h1>Scanner<\/h1>\n<p>Brother MFC-7460DN is brscan4 model. The drivers can be obtained <a href=\"http:\/\/welcome.solutions.brother.com\/bsc\/public_s\/id\/linux\/en\/download_scn.html#brscan4\">here<\/a>. The installation is straightforward:<br \/>\n<code><br \/>\nrpm -ihv --nodeps brscan4-0.3.0-2.x86_64.rpm<br \/>\nrpm -ihv --nodeps brscan-skey-0.2.1-3.x86_64.rpm<br \/>\n<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Add network scanner entry.
